Hoisin sauce is a must-have for elevating the flavors of classic Asian dishes like this Hoisin Butter Prawn, or Peking duck.

Because we’re dedicated to 100% Keto and store-bought hoisin often comes loaded with sugar, I decided to create my own version, and it’s become a firm favorite in my kitchen.

While it might have a slight difference to the traditional hoisin due to my secret ingredient, ginger garlic paste, I find the flavor to be even more irresistible. Give it a try and let your taste buds be the judge!

You’ll need one small saucepan, a suitable bowl or container and a few ingredients…

How to make

Keto Hoisin Sauce

Time needed: 15 minutes

Make the perfect Keto Hoisin Sauce

  1. Combine the Ingredients

    Ingredients:
    ¼ cup soy sauce
    1 tablespoon sugar free maple syrup
    1 tablespoon rice vinegar
    1 teaspoon sesame oil
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    ½ teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
    ¼ teaspoon Chinese 5-Spice

    Start by combine all the ingredients except the water and Xantham gum in a small saucepan.
    Cook gently over a low heat until everything has dissolved and you have a nice glossy sauce.
    Remove from heat.

  2. Xantham Gum

    ⅛ teaspoom xanthum gum
    3 tablespoons water

    Mix the 1/8 teaspoon of Xantham gum into 3 Tablespoons of water.
    Gently whist this mixture into the sauce.
    (The Xantham will dissolve and thicken as the sauce cools).

  3. Cool and store for use.

    Once the sauce has cooled, transfer to a bowl, cover it, and store in the fridge until required.
    (l normally make a bigger batch – it will keep in the fridge for a few days no problem)

  • Add prawns and stir for 1-2 minutes
  • Stir in the Hoisin sauce
  • Top with sesame seeds and spring onions to serve

For a slightly sweet and garlicky twist, replace the hoisin sauce with a keto-friendly honey garlic sauce. Create the sauce by combining minced garlic, sugar-free honey substitute, soy sauce, and a pinch of red pepper flakes. Coat the prawns in the sauce and sauté until they’re perfectly glazed and irresistibly flavorful.
Spicy Chili Prawns:
